BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair: The League City Owner’s Guide

The identification step matters because BFT has changed keypad connectors across production years. A T-Box keypad from 2014 won’t necessarily plug into a control board that BFT shipped in 2021, even if both say “BFT” on the front. We match by the label printed inside the keypad housing and the connector pin count at the board, not by the color of the faceplate or what the previous installer wrote in permanent marker.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: BFT’s own replacement keypads are reliable and hold up well in this climate, but the lead time on factory parts can run past two weeks. Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• Some keys work, others don’t. The membrane or tactile switches under the keypad face have worn unevenly. We see this on keypads that get used with the same four digits every day for years. The fix is a new keypad assembly, not a board replacement.
• The keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the keypad itself is fine and the signal isn’t reaching the BFT control board. Could be a broken conductor in the underground run, a loose terminal, or a blown input on the board. We test each leg before we quote a part.
• The intercom rings but audio is dead in one direction. That’s a speaker or microphone failure inside the intercom module, or a corroded audio wire at the termination point. In League City’s humidity, corrosion at the connection is more common than actual speaker failure. We open it, document what we find, and only replace what’s actually failed.
• Water or condensation inside the keypad housing. The gasket has failed or the housing has a hairline crack. Once moisture gets inside a BFT keypad, the board traces corrode fast. This one won’t get better with time.
• The gate opens on its own or won’t stay closed after someone uses the keypad. A keypad can send a false trigger when a worn key sticks or when moisture bridges contacts. That’s a safety issue more than an annoyance. We treat it as an emergency repair.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check a few things before calling: confirm the keypad has power (most BFT keypads show a backlight or LED), check the breaker for the gate operator hasn’t tripped, and look for visible water or ant debris inside the keypad housing. Those are inspection steps, not repairs.

What a homeowner shouldn’t do is open the keypad face and start probing connections or pulling wires. This is low-voltage, but the control board it feeds into is not. A short across the wrong two terminals can take out the BFT control board, and that’s a $400 part instead of a $35 connector.
